Caving - Hilliers & Fairy Cave

Caving - Hilliers Cave & Fairy Cave

Tim and I arrived at the car park just gone 10 and met Rob - This was Rob's first visit to the caves of Fairy Quarry. Once in the cave we took a right turn to pass into a grovelly gravelly crawl to get into the system. There were broken formations littering the floor in the initial passages - this was down to old quarry blasting. There were also some rather dodgy looking rockfalls on the floor!  We then reached Tar Hall which is a chamber covered in tar which had dripped down from the quarry.

A bit further on we passed the connection to Fairy Cave where we would come back to later.  We continued through various passages to the Upper Grotto, Cambridge Grotto and on past Brenda's Chamber.  Occasional stops on the way for Tim to take photos.

Formations
Just on from Brenda's Chamber we stopped for a short while to explain the next section to Rob - The passage that leads into the Red Room is called Suicide! - The reason being that the boulder choke you have to navigate through doesn't look all that stable, though there have not been any reports of rock movement! We made it to the Red Room and it is immediately obvious how it got it's name!

We then retraced our route back to the Fairy Cave connection. It starts with a traverse across to the bridge connection and then a crawl along some mud banks. Eventually you come to the puddle!! there had been a fair bit of rain and the puddle was quite full. We decided it would be best done with helmets off to allow more breathing room!!!

After the duck it's about 20 minutes if crawling and walking passage to the Fairy Cave entrance.

Four hours after entering Hilliers Cave we emerged from the entrance to Fairy Cave.

Clapper Chaos Handbell Group - Blandford Corn Exchange Concert

Clapper Chaos Handbell Group
Blandford Corn Exchange Concert

Clapper Chaos were asked to perform in a concert to raise money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust.  Other performers included  the Wimborne and Ferndown Singers that my mother sings with - as shown in the photo below.

Sarah was unable to join us tonight so the players were myself, Tim and Elliott.  The pieces we played were - Kingsfold, Popeye, Pie Jesu and Theme from Jurassic Park.  The audience seemed to enjoy Popeye as it caused a chuckles in a few places.  Hopefully they have raised a good amount considering the foul weather tonight.

Caving - Singing River Mine

Caving - Singing River Mine

Tim and I arrived at Shipham Green at 18:45 - Richard and two others were already down the cave so we headed on in.  We descended the entrance shaft and made our way to Singing River chamber, we took the passage on the left and found Richard on their way out!!  We left our SRT kits and continued on to explore the West Series and the Stream Galleries first.  Back to collect our kit and have a play at SRT - Tim rigged the pitch above the "Stinking Gulf" and I had a play with my new chest harness and with Richard's Pantin.  We then took a diversion to the other side of the Gulf and made our way to the Great Hall.  The water level was very high so we did not go into the Great Hall - we climbed up on to a higher level  and had a good view of the watery chamber!  We exited the cave about 21:30 and set off to find Richard at Blagdon club to return his kit.
