Caving - Portland

Caving - Portland

Coffin Hole
The entrance to Coffin Hole is reached along the same path as Allotment Dig and Flagpole.  It is about 10m down the cliff face from the Allotment Dig turn off.  The cave is about a 20m long crawl with very little in the way of formations.  There is a chamber at the end with enough room for all three of us to stand up and turn around to come back out.

Persil Rift
This was a return visit to this particular cave as last time we didn't have enough kit to descend the pitch.  It is possible to see a way on from the current end to the cave but it is currently blocked by some flowstone formations.

We also walked down to the Bill to see if there were any sea caves we could get into.  Whilst walking along some of the ledges Matt was clearly not keeping an eye on the sea as a wave broke over the rocks leaving him rather soggy!!

Day Out - Tyneham, Pondfield Bay and Worbarrow Bay

Tyneham, Pondfield Cove and Sea Cave and Worbarrow Bay

Beautiful sunny day so Tim and I went for a walk around Tyneham village, down to Pondfield bay and Worbarrow bay.  There was a sea cave in Pondfield Bay which required exploring!

Day Out - Lulworth Cove, Stair Hole, Durdle Door and St Oswald's Bay

Lulworth Cove, Stair Hole, Durdle Door and St Oswald's Bay

Great weather today on the Dorset coast.  Hadn't been to Lulworth for many years so we thought it was a perfect day for a visit.  We walked round the west side of the bay and found a sea cave!  We went in to have a look how far back it went.  Tim was ahead of me and I don't think his eyes had adjusted to the dark because he walked straight into shin deep water!!!  We walked back via Stair Hole and got and ice cream to have on the walk over to Durdle Door.  After much photo taking we came back along St Oswald's Bay.  A lovely walk despite getting a little sunburnt and Tim having wet feet the whole time!!

Caving - Goatchurch Cavern & Pierre's Pot

Caving - Goatchurch Cavern & Pierre's Pot

Took Elliott for his first caving trip.  Into Goatchurch Cavern first - In through the old show cave entrance, down bloody tight to make our way to the drainpipe!  back up through the mid terrace and exit the tradesman's entrance.  Elliott seemed to have enjoyed the experience so we went into Pierre's Pot too.  A successful first trip as Elliott didn't say he would never go again!!!

Caving - Balch's Coral Grotto and Balch's Aven Series

Caving - Balch's Aven Chamber and Balch's Coral Grotto

Tim wanted to try out some underground photography techniques.  We went to Fairy Quarry in Stoke St Michael to revisit a cave we were unable to go far into on a previous visit due to a large quantity of snoozing bats!!

We went into Balch's Aven Chamber first - The entrance is through an oil drum high up the quarry face.  The short entrance crawl leads to a sloping pitch.  Descending this leads to well decorated passages to the Aven Chamber.

Next we had a look at Balch's Coral Grotto - After a narrow entrance section a 3m pitch leads to the remaining chambers.
