Caving - Wessex Cave Club South Wales Weekend - Day 1

Wessex Cave Club
South Wales Weekend

Day 1 - 05.05.12 - Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (OFD) - The cave of the black spring.  Group of eight led by Noel - in the cave at 12:00 out at 17:30 - Through trip from the bottom to the OFDII entrance.

OFD is Britain's third longest cave as well as being the deepest at 308 m deep. The trip from the Top Entrance to the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu 1 entrance is the deepest cave through trip in the British Isles at 228 m.  The cave is decorated throughout with many different styles of calcite decorations of which the most well known are The 2m high Columns, with The Trident being the longest stalactite in the UK at 5 metres.

The trip was fast paced and I haven't got a clue what route we took - not even by looking at the survey!!  There were a few sections that stick in my mind...The main streamway was hard going with fast flowing water around your feet/legs and deep enough in places that I had to swim!, The letterbox - a slot about 40 cm high and 1.5 m long, situated halfway up a cliff!! and the Trident and Judge

Route we took
The Streamway
The Letterbox!
The Trident
The Judge
