Carpal Tunnel Decompression Surgery
During surgery the roof of the carpal tunnel, known as the transverse carpal ligament, is cut to reduce pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. I had a local anaesthetic to numb my hand and wrist, but I remained awake throughout the operation. It was not the most pleasureable of experiences - although I couldn't feel any pain I was able to feel odd sensations like pulling, pressure and rubbing. The worst feeling was when I felt my fingers curl up due to the surgeon lifting the transverse carpal ligament and then they flopped when he cut it!
This evening my hand feels very uncomfortable rather than painful. It should feel better each day and be the end to the discomfort I had before.
